Batteries 101

The ClubHub sensors, like all battery-powered devices, have a few best practices to follow in order to get the best performance. Please read below for more details about what batteries the ClubHub sensors use, what to do when you need to replace them, and troubleshooting tips. Additionally, for sensor configuration tips, check out our Configuration 101 blog post.

The Basics

The ClubHub sensors use CR2032 3-volt batteries that can be purchased in most drug stores or online. The batteries are designed to last between 3 and 12 months based on the number of rounds you play. The more you play the more frequently you will need to replace the batteries in your sensors.

In place of an on/off switch, the sensors function based on orientation. The two orientations are:

  1. In-play position: when the clubhead is down and the club handle is up (i.e. when the club is at address). The sensors are active and using battery when in the in-play position.
  2. Out-of-play position: when the clubhead is up and the club handle is down (i.e. when the clubs are in your bag). The sensors are off and not using battery when in the out-of-play position.

Important note: these positions and their respective battery uses are true even when you are not actively using the ClubHub app. Please keep that in mind when using your clubs without the app and when storing them. It is recommended that players keep their clubs in the out-of-play position any time they are not actively using a club to hit. For example, while waiting on the tee box, waiting for your turn to putt on the green, reviewing your data on the app while at the range, etc.

How to Replace

When the time comes to replace a battery, remove the cap and push/pull the old battery out. Make sure you install a new battery with the + side up. If you accidentally install a new battery with the + side down, the battery will drain very quickly and you will need to properly install a new battery. Troubleshooting

If you install a new battery but you are still getting a low battery warning it may be because you did not install a brand new battery. The battery level in the sensor will only go back up to 100% if you install a new battery that is 2.9 volts or more. Installing a slightly used or old battery may not reset the battery level.

If you are unsure of a configured sensor’s battery level, you can do what is referred to as a Range Test. You can perform this test by doing the following:

  • From the homepage in the ClubHub app, start a range session.
  • Put a club in-play (head down, grip up) until you see the club appear at the top of the screen.
  • Once you see the club appear on the screen, put the club out-of-play (head up, grip down).
  • The battery level that shows after the club registers that it is out of play is the current level.
  • If a club is not recognized as in-play in the app, that most likely means the battery is completely dead and you will need to replace it and perform another Range Test to confirm the battery level.
    • If you install a new battery and a club still does not come into play, please contact us at info@kineteksports.com so we can help troubleshoot any issues that might be occurring.

Extra Tips

  • Sensors configured to drivers and putters usually need to be replaced sooner or more frequently than ones on other clubs because of their extended periods of time in-play. Players tend to spend more time with their club in the in-play position while on the tee box and on the green.
  • The battery levels you see on the My Clubs page may not be current. These levels represent the last reported level from when each club last recorded a swing and communicated it to the app. In order to guarantee that the levels are accurate, you can perform a Range Test as detailed above.
  • Keep extra batteries in your golf bag just in case so you never get stuck with a sensor that doesn’t record right before you start a round.
